Annie Berriman
Annie has always had an interest in art, particularly Dutch flower painting and plants.
Annie has a BA Hons in Jewellery and Silversmithing from Sir John Cass School of Art. She then graduated from Goldsmiths with a PGCE and spent many years teaching Design Technology and Art.
The continuing love of plants led to a BA Hons in Garden Design from Kingston University and work as a Garden Designer. That love of plants and art came together, and at Kew she completed a Certificate of Botanical Illustration with Lucy T Smith and then obtained a Diploma in Botanical Painting from the Chelsea School of Botanical Art.
Annie became a member of the Hampton Court Palace Florilegium Society in 2022 and has had her paintings accepted for the Hampton Court Palace Archive.
She has exhibited in ‘Nature’s Garden Delight’s’ Exhibition at the Sunbury Gallery, 2023, Green and Stone Gallery ‘Works on Paper’ 2024, Society of Botanical Artists ‘Plantae 25’ at the Mall Gallery.
Drawing matters to me
It means I can slow down, focus, and make detailed observations. I like to be part of the drawing landscape, becoming familiar with the space by revisiting it to add layers to the drawings, observing change, and really looking at the site. Drawing is learning for me.
My artwork focusses on the everyday, the landscape we take for granted and mostly ignore, the grass verge that we walk by every day, the fallen autumn leaves we walk through, the fallen tree we walk past, to be closely looked at and their life appreciated.
I want the viewer to slow down to see the layers and understand the interdependence of nature and our lives. Plants are inseparable from humanity; they affect us and we affect them.
Our lives are entangled.
